- July 2007: Pavel Tonkov becomes... actor!!! (Sandrine Viollet, July 7)

Having to put between bracket his project of creation of cyclist team, Pavel Tonkov is currently devoted to his second professional project: to open his hotel. The inauguration of this one is envisaged by the end of the year in Cordoba. Multiplying the return tickets between Madrid and Andalusia, Pavel not have the time to follow the cyclist news in this moment. However, some supporters did not forget him, and one of them more particularly: the director Pablo Sereno De la Viña. Since he saw Pavel to win on the top of Valgrande Pajares, he have an idea on his spirit: "And why I would not carry out a day a film on the cycling, whose Pavel would be one of the principal actors?" The idea makes its way and at the beginning of 2007, the broad outline of the scenario is traced: a fight between two great champions, who would be played the victory in the Tour of France in mountain for a few seconds... In short, the film at large spectacle that all supporters of cycling wait... But Pavel, well-known for his discretion in front of the cameras, would accept this "challenge"? Well: yes!!! The Franco-Spanish director Pablo Sereno, of which the last film "Three kisses and thousand of more" (www.troisbaiserset1000deplus.com) will make its national exit in France in September, met Pavel in Madrid last May. As incredible as that can appear, Pavel was shown immediately interested by the project. In the film, whose still semi-official title would be "July-Act III", Pavel would play in the first time act the part of a champion triples victorious of the Tour of France (justice is finally returned!!!) , before becoming the trainer of his principal adversary... In addition to his future role of actor, Pavel also collaborates in the development of the scenario. He describes at Pablo Sereno which are the training to which must subject a cyclist racing. These training will appear among the principal scenes of film (remember Rocky III...). The casting mixes as many names of the cinema and cyclist medium. Joan Franck Charansonnet and Judith Guy, the actors "fetishes" of Pablo Sereno, will be surrounded of Bernard Thévenet, very interested by the film also him, and Jean-Rene Goddart. It should be noted that Daria Garcia Tonkov should also appear in the casting. For the moment, the turning is envisaged in 2009. It will be necessary for to have patience before seeing Pavel Tonkov covering the Yellow jersey...

The president of the Russian Federation of Cycling, Alexander Goussiatnikov, made the following proposal publicly: "It becomes essential to create a technical station of coordinator for the team of Russia. Indeed, our big leaders are all abroad and, seen of Russia, it is impossible for us to judge their state of form and to make a good selection. We thus seek a person who would permanently have our runners under his eyes, and which would be also a reference mark for the children. For this job, we think of Viatchelav Ekimov, Dimitri Konyshev and Pavel Tonkov. In this moment, we examine the possibility of inviting one of them at this job. But it is not a question of a contest between the three, we would be content with any proposal for a cooperation".

- July 2006: Return to Samara (samara.kp.ru, July 19)

Pavel Tonkov made a notable apparation in public the last day of the Championship of Russia of mountain-bike which was held beside Samara. Pavel lived in this town of 1984 to 1992, when he would run in the Soviet selection of cycling. And if he is felt very well in Spain, the return towards Russia is always his preferred voyage. "I wanted to see the city, the Volga". While giving the prices to the winners, Pavel renewed in front of the Russian press his last declarations. Namely that he wants to remain in the cyclist medium like managing of a team. And now, his clearer his projects. "I have in the head the project to become manager of an Italian professional team. I invested much in this project. I lived during years in Italy, country with which I preserved strong bonds, and where I have the possibility of working more easily. I prepared the project of the creation of a big team, which would approach Mapei, for example. I am thinking of the questions of organizations, in particular about obtaining the licence. But I also invested in other businesses. I want in particular to open a small hotel. And of course, I continue the practice of the sport, in particular mountain-bike and ski the winter".

- Pavel, which did you make since last October when you stopped the competition?

- I could finally really rest me. That made a long time that I awaited that. These last months, with Daria, we passed them to travel. Lately, we made a stay in family in the Pyrenees during which we skied much. But before that, we travelled by car in all Spain, then to Italy.

- You however travelled all these roads while you would run, but one has the impression that it is the first time that you take time to really discover them...

- Yes, it is true. But what board I seen during all these years: bituminizes, the trees, the houses, the public? I could only see all that very quickly. I knew these countries only surface, now I discover them in-depth. I can finally all visit, the museums, the theatres, etc...

- And when the voyages will be finished, the idea of the creation of a team will take form?

- But I work there already now, all gently, in parallel. I carry out negotiations with sponsors who are ready to believe in me. "Old connections" work actively. That follows its course...

When the Russian press contacts Pavel, a few days after the official advertisement of his retirement, it expects that the champion of Ishevsk evokes with nostalgia his last victories. However, quite to the contrary, Pavel speaks already about his future: "I do not conceive my future without cycling. I try to create a team. Concretely, I would not say any more, because how much projects fall in ruins at the end. But I know that, in one way or another, I will help the young people, those which begin hardly their career. It is with them that I want to share my experiment".
